Yuri Honing er klar for sin tredje konsert i Ørsta kulturhus. The Times omtalar han som ein av dei mest kreative og fryktlause saksofonistane for tida, og vi er stolte av at han atter ein gong tek turen heilt frå Holland til vesle Ørsta!

Yuri Honing is one of Holland’s most important saxophone players (according to the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD and the Oxford Introduction to jazz) with touring experience in over 90 countries and a discography of almost 40 titles.

Honing played and recorded with greats as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ibrahim Malooff, Craig Taborn and Paul Bley. In 2001 Honing received the Edison Jazz Award (Dutch Grammy) for his recording Seven, featuring Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Paul Motion.

In 2012 Yuri Honing was awarded with the Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious jazz prize in the Netherlands.

In 2009 he released for Universal ‘Phase Five’, a pop album where he collaborated with o.a. international acclaimed popstar Sarah Bettens.

For years Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing has been considered one of the main representatives of European jazz, a/o as a result of his successful Yuri Honing Trio. The recordStar Tracks (1996) caused his international breakthrough - Honing built a unique personal style, based on jazz, pop and non-western musical traditions.

He also played and record with the godfather of the Dutch impro, Mischa Mengelberg, lead a group called ‘Oriënt Express’ which was based on a blend of jazz and traditional music from the Middle East,  Recorded Schubert’s Winterreise with pianist Nora Mulder, and an album with orchestra arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza.

Since a couple of years Honing leads his acoustic quartet with pianist Wolfert Brederode, Icelandic bassplayer Gulli Gudmundsson and Dutch drummer Joost Lijbaart.

The group toured and performed on major festivals in Europe, Asia and South America.

The new album ‘Desire’ from the group, was released in beginning of 2015. For this album Yuri used influences from from jazz, church music, contemporary pop music and modern classical music. Desire can be considered as Yuri’s most personal album. Not only was Desire declared best jazz album of the year, it was also Holland’s no.1 best selling album in 2015.
